Overview

Discover some of Baltistan’s most unforgettable places in style on the luxury version of our Skardu Baltistan Valley tour. By day, this 9-day trip will take you to breathtaking high plateaus, glistening alpine lakes and intriguing history spots; by night, it’ll see you resting your head in some of Pakistan’s best hotels, from the Shangrila Resort with Lower Kachura Lake at its heart to historic Serena Shigar Palace.

Starting from the capital city of Islamabad, you’ll head north into the very heart of the Baltistan region. Travel through the beautiful Kaghan and Naran Valleys, gazing in awe at the mountain peaks that reach the sky, and experience an elevation over 4000m at Babusar Pass. Follow the path of the Indus River and see the mountains, meadows and forests of Skardu, wonder at the chill of the Katpana Cold Desert, and discover the region’s ancient heritage in Shigar and Khaplu. With some roads too adventurous for a regular vehicle, you’ll also get to travel in a 4x4 Jeep from the mesmerising Deosai Plains, stretching out between mountain peaks, to the charming and tranquil Astore Valley.

As with most places in Pakistan, the journey is often just as breathtaking as the destination. As you’re driven along mountain roads, watch as you pass vibrant cities, impossibly tall mountain peaks, and waterfalls decorating rocky cliff faces. The raw power of nature is at work here and you’ll get to experience it all.

Throughout your journey, you can relax in luxury and enjoy some of the country’s finest hospitality. Stay at a hand-picked selection of Pakistan's most luxurious hotels, many of which have a tale or two to tell about the region’s history. You’ll start each day with a delicious breakfast, too, where you can feast on local delicacies – just what you’ll need to gear up for each day of exploration and adventure.

Itinerary

  • Day 1
    Arrive in Islamabad
Today, you’ll get your first taste of northern Pakistan as you fly into the country’s capital city, Islamabad. Most international inbound flights into Islamabad arrive in the morning so upon arrival at Islamabad International Airport, you’ll be picked up and driven to the Pearl Continental hotel for prearranged early check in. This afternoon, you’ll get to experience this wonderfully modern city on a guided tour. Walk beneath the towering arms of the Pakistan Monument, explore the contemporary Faisal Mosque, and visit Shakar Parian, a national park within the city that offers incredible views over Islamabad and its chaotic sister city, Rawalpindi. After a day of exploration, enjoy your first night in Pakistan at the Pearl Continental Hotel Rawalpindi.
  • Day 2
    Islamabad – Chilas
After a good night’s sleep, enjoy breakfast at your hotel and get ready for today’s breathtaking journey to Chilas. This morning, you’ll set out on a drive that will take you north along the Hazara Motorway. You’ll pass cities like Abbottabad and Mansehra and enjoy a short stop at Balakot Hassa Riverside. After, you’ll travel through the breathtaking Kaghan Valley, then over Babusar Pass, a mountain pass set on a plateau of over 3000 square km at an elevation of 4,173m. When you arrive in Chilas, you’ll be taken to your stop for the night, the luxurious Shangrila Hotel. Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 3
    Chilas – Skardu
After breakfast, you’ll take to the road again, heading east to today’s destination: Skardu. Today’s journey is sure to be just as breathtaking as yesterday’s as you travel through the Indus Valley, following the path of the flowing Indus River all the way to Skardu. Due to road reconstruction work, the journey may take a little longer than normal. You’ll likely find that the view from your car window more than makes up for the delay though. Upon reaching Skardu, you’ll get to enjoy the calming waters of Lower Kachura Lake, then spend the night on its banks at the Shangrila Resort. Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 4
    Skardu – Shigar
After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, the journey to Shigar awaits. Today’s drive is a shorter one, making it the perfect opportunity to explore the local area even further. On the way to Shigar, you’ll get to experience the breathtaking Katpana Cold Desert. Set high in the mountains, it’s one of only a few cold deserts in the world. When you reach the town of Shigar, a visit to the Amburiq Mosque is first on the agenda. The mosque is made from mud and wood and is considered to be one of the oldest in South Asia. It wasn’t always a mosque though; it was once a Buddhist place of worship but was converted in the 16th century as the Islamic religion spread across the area. After that, discover more of the region’s rich history with a visit to Shigar Fort. If it’s a sunny day, a wander around the fort’s garden is a must – make sure to look out for the fresh fruit that grows here! After a day of exploring Shigar, you can rest your head at the historic Serena Shigar Palace. Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 5
    Manthoka Waterfall & Khaplu
After breakfast at the Serena Shigar Palace hotel, your driver will lead you on today’s excursion. Following the Indus River southeast, you’ll stop off at Manthoka Waterfall. Stand at the waterfall’s base and watch as the water falls from the clifftop 180 feet above you, crashing over the cliff’s rocky face as it goes. When you’re ready to hit the road again, your driver will take you further east along the Shyok River Valley Road to Khaplu. The town of Khaplu has plenty of old charm to discover, with its historic buildings and ancient willow trees. Visit Khaplu Palace, an old fort built in the mid 19th century that used to be home to the Raja (ruler) of Khaplu. Today, it’s a hotel and museum, open for you to explore. You’ll also get to visit Kahplu’s old mosque. Built in 1307, Chaqchan Mosque is thought to be one of the oldest in the region, with intricate wooden carvings and traditional Kashmiri-style architecture. This evening, you’ll drive back to Shigar and enjoy another night at the enchanting Serena Shigar Palace hotel. Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 6
Deosai Plateau – Sadpara Lake-Rama Astore
This evening, you’ll get to return to Chilas once again but there’s so much to see before you get there, so enjoy another breakfast at the hotel and get ready for a day of adventure. This morning, you’ll climb aboard a four-wheel drive Willy Jeep, a vehicle that’s perfect for today’s journey. Your driver will take you south, passing the beautiful Satpara Lake on your way to the Deosai National Park. Here, a Jeep safari across the Deosai Plains awaits. You’ll get to see exactly why Deosai deserves its national park status as you explore its natural majesty, like the perfectly blue Sheosar Lake. After the safari, you’ll head to Astore Valley, where you’ll swap the Jeep for a different car and head to Chilas. You’ll spend the night in Chilas at the Shangrila Hotel once again. Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 7
    Rama Astore – Besham
After another delicious breakfast at the Shangrila Hotel, your driver will take you south towards Naran. Along the way, you’ll get another chance to experience the wonders of the Kaghan Valley and the high elevation Babusar Pass. Once you reach Naran, the afternoon is yours to explore the beautiful Naran Valley, then the night will be spent at the luxurious Hotel DeManchi overlooking Kaghan Valley. Meals included: Breakfast
  • Day 8
    Besham – Islamabad
After breakfast at your hotel, today’s adventure starts with a drive in a four-wheel drive Jeep along mountain roads to visit Saiful Muluk Lake. Formed when glacial till blocked the course of the valley’s stream, Saiful Muluk Lake is a perfect example of Pakistan’s natural wonder. You’ll get to experience the lake’s peace, its pristine water and stunning mountainous backdrop for yourself, before continuing your journey to Islamabad in the afternoon. This evening, you’ll get to see even more of the capital city as you visit Daman-e-Koh and Pirsohawa, viewpoints in the Margalla Hills. With aerial views of the city, these viewpoints are the perfect spot to take in the modern grid pattern of the city’s layout. When night comes, it’s time to head back to your hotel, the Pearl Continental, for your final night in northern Pakistan. Meals included: Breakfast
